What is the usual recommended type of mic used for a production. I will have someone holding a boom pole above the action. There are so many kinds (cardiod, omnidirectional.) which is best for a small budget?

I have had a lot of success with AT 815 and 835 shotgun mikes. They are reasonably priced, effective and give good sound. I run mine through a Sampson 4-channel mixer, which has 3-band EQ, and output (XLR jacks) hardwired into the videocam. They have excellent pickup patterns (815 60 degree pickup, 835 around 40) which means that you can stand off from the actors, or shoot in noisy environments and still get good quality sound. Remember not to position your actors by a highly reflective (hard) surface, then shotgun toward them.
