AVI files can be zipped to 60% of their original size.

MPEG and MOV files can only be zipped to about 95% of their original size.

To me this seems like a very strong motivator to make movies in AVI format.

Does anyone have any info I may be missing?
I am new to movie making and exploring the basics now.

yeah....avi is only several times bigger than mpeg's. So the compression probably ends up being the same. Because of the big size, comes big datarate...which comes greater difficulty in playing large files without glitches. However, It also depends on which codec you use and whether the mpeg is converted or created. I have yet to find an mpeg encoder which encodes as nicely as any mjpeg codec...and since my card has a hardware codec...avi is the best way to go. Figure it according to your system capabilites.
Anyway...why would you ever wanna zip the files up? and you'll find that the bigger the file, the greater the compression ratio. I don't think file type matters

I've found that mostion jpeg4 v2 compression in premiere has a great compresion ratio and maintains great quality, but I can't figure out how to control the compression size. It's always going compress to the same size. Quicktime mJPEG isn't nearlys good as avi under mjpeg compression. But quikctime excels with some low motion movies under sorenson compression. Though I have no clue why I'd want to make a movie that has no motion.

Do you guys know if you can shorten the size of a file by reducing the number of keyframes in mjpeg compression setup in premiere?

Haha damn I knew it was too good to be true.
I am interested in small file sizes because the internet (and my PC) have serious limitations.
Which brings up my next question.
I went to an mIRC channel where you could download movies...the files had a .dat extension...so how would I open up a .dat file on some movie player?

go through media player and open the file through there. Make sure to select to see All File Types.
anyway....mpeg ain't that bad...it's just like compressing the avi...except in a directly viewable format.

I tried to compress a movie with bink once.
it was so ridiculously slow it was useless.
