I just finished watching Stanley Kubric's "Eyes Wide Shut." In my opinion, it was an intreging, but overall crappy film. You could definitely tell it was a Kubric, but the script just didn't work. (You have to wonder how much better "Eyes Wide Shut" would have been if Kubric had lived to see it through.)

Anyway, I really like how, during the interior night scenes, a deep blue shined through the windows. (The blue looked really good against the warm tones within the interiors.) I was just wondering, how did they go about doing this? Did they put gels over the windows or did they put gels over the lights? I'd really like to use this for a dream sequence in my next movie, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it.

If you balance film for indoor light, sunlight shows up blue.

However, I doubt that is what happened here.

Most likely they used gels over the lights, and probably reflected them off a like colored background.

Just my coin into it: Natural night light (ie moonlight/starlight) isnīt blue. Why it is on film is by a multiple of causes but it isnīt natural but rather something of an urban legend. It CAN however make a good effect, if you know how to use it, but as it is so overworked in US cinema you really should try something else for making it look like night.

One thing about moonlight: itīs perfectly sharp and cast hard shadows, itīs reflected sunlight.

The matrix used green moonlight. That is cool. Okay, the entire Matrix was green but nonetheless.

The city of the lost children used red or orange moonlight.

What Iīm saying is: play. Donīn necessarily follow the blue legend just because everyone else do. This is however perhaps not the right post to say this at, as you wanted blue light for a reason, it seems.

The entire matrix wasn't green.. only the parts where they were inside the computer.. the outside world was blue... Yeah holywood decided moonlight was blue for some reason.. you have to admit it looks pretty in movies... remember the scene at the end of hunt for red october? When they're sitting on the sub in the lake? I allways liked the blueness of that shot... Just my opinion and random babling as for doing it I'd also just go with gels over your lights and if you want it to look like it's coming through the window just shine your light through the window...

No offence but I can't stand that whole "Night is not blue " crap. First off night is blue. if you don’t believe me take a white sheet of paper outside at night and tell me what color it is. Furthermore, the sky is blue during the day, and at night it is not black, it is a really dark blue. So when you add moon light, it casts a blue tone on things.

NOW I know the effect is very slight. some people don't even notice the blue tone to the night sky. It also depends on were you live, how much light is being reflected off the ground. ect.
AND I also know that Hollywood often OVER uses blue OR uses too much blue. BUT it is FILM and with film you need light to expose a picture...SO what color do you use? Pink?

Ok that is my $o.o2
thank you and good night

yup blue gels/filters over the light would be the best way *S*
if you have the light shine thru a window you can add some more effect to it by filling the room with some smoke/dust to get get the actual beam that comes thru the window visible for the camera, looks great if you ask me, and it might be a good way to add to the mood/atmosphere in your dream shot you talk about, if you want to ask more about the effect just email me, my addy can be found in my stats, click the little "?" above my post *S*
