For the people who have seen The Beach and/or The Insider (which was robbed at the oscars btw), I wanted to know if you all noticed the very nice looking night shots in those films. *semi-spoilers*The scene where it happens in The Beach is when Richard in Francois are walking on the beach at night and go into the water to kiss, and The Insider scene is when Pacino is on the cell phone knee high in the water. Im very curious how the filmmakers got this effect to look so damn good. The Beach scene was actually filmed during day time and was evidently converted to night in post...as for The Insider, i dont know. If anyone has seen the movies and knows what im talkin about and think they know how they did it...please respond. Thanks |

Day for night is a pretty elementary effect. Though it is probably not as easy as it sounds. I seriuosly doubt it was added in post production. It is simply finding the perfect mix using a blue gel and underexposing the film a bit or not compensating the exposure for the gel at all. |

That sounds like what it would be, cept for the fact i saw the footage of it and it was clearly daytime and it was from the same angle, thats the only reason i assumed it was done in post. |

Day for night always has been principally "done in post". Although a yellow filter (not blue) was used, the majority of the effect comes from the way that the film is processed. |

I thought you just underexposed in camera? Maybe only for reversal... Oh well whateva The trickiest thing about day for night is making sure you don't get anything (like the sun) in the shot that would reveal that it's really day time... |
