HDTV as proposed will be something like 1080... which is about the same as digital movie projection...(regular 35 mm film is approx 5000 lines depending on the film stock) that is assuming that the TV stations will use the frequency space that way... they are proposing using the extra frequency space the goverment gave to them for more regular channels
Broadcasters don't want to give us better TV just more opportunities to see commercials
Also, I don't believe an analog signal really has a specific "resolution". If you watch a TV program on a projection TV with a 100" screen, the image doesn't get blocky up close, it gets fuzzy.
From my experience in hooking my computer up to my TV, the best resolution I've gotten out of my 27" is about 540xsomething.
Like I said, I'm just being nit-picky. 640x480 is a good resolution to work with. I still prefer 720x480, though, so it's easily convertable to DV.
