I have to do a short eight minute film in media class and I have just begun writing down some ideas and planning and stuff and I seem to have come up with a perfect concept. I did not just want to do a boring ole comedy sketch this year so I'm going for something technically and emotionally advanced. The basic story is that a man wakes up to the sound of a phone ringing. He is shocked to find that he is not only in a public phone booth but he is handcuffed to the phone! He answers the phone and a deep distorted voice replies telling him that he is about to undergo an experiment that will take him into the deepest stages of paranoia or something. He is told that his pockets have been emptied and that he has been left with only enough money to make one phonecall. Who will he call. He is told to stay away from police or yelling out to passerbys as he is being watched all the time. This freaks him out as well as enducing the first stage of paranoia. Now what I want to do is think of many different ways maybe three or four subtle little things that people say or what he sees that will increse his level of paranoia until he actually beleives that he is a part of some big conspiracy. Now I also need an idea for a conclusion and a motive for the people that did this to him. As you can see I have only really figured out the general gist of the film. Also I want the whole film to take place in the phone booth and I might even try and do it with one huge continuous eight minute shot but that might be just a little hard but an impressive thought none the less Anyways I apologize for the long post and any help would be great. Thanks guys.

P.S this is loosley based on a rumor I read somewhere that Alfred Hitchcock was going to do a suspense film based entirley around a phone booth. Just thought you'd like to know.

lets see, things to induce paranoia...

1)seeing things that aren't really there, or hearing things that no one else can hear. (maybe they administered some kind of drug to him so his mind would...go nuts?

2)sleep deprivation. if he hadn't slept in days, his mind would be holding on by a strand.

3)someone's out to get him in the end...or so they tell him. the mere fact that someone wants to kill you would make you quite paranoid.

i can't think of anything else right now.

conclusion? i'm taking a psychology course at university...it's really up in the air about how far you can take experiments, how much you tell and what you can do to a patient. maybe you coul duse that someway? some mad psychologist who was kicked out of his science. Dr. Fraiser Crane from hell.

i will post back!

I actually read somewhere the other day (can't think where) that a feature film (called 'Phonebox' I think...) is either currently under production or about to be released with a very similar storyline - The whole thing takes place in a phonebox.

A guy is walking down the street and a nearby phonebox rings. When he answers it, he is told that there are several snipers on various surrounding rooftops and if he attempts to leave the phonebox they will shoot him. That's all I can remember reading.

This is not an attack. I am not at all implying that you are copying or were influenced by knowledge of this film, but thought that you might want to know about it ....

Anyway, I think it is a clever concept which should turn out well. Good luck if you are going to do it.

It's called Phone Booth, and although it does sound similar to WEEZL's idea, it doesn't sound THAT similar.

Thanks guys I actually just heard about that movie just before I read you guys posts and I was a bit peeved like always but its cool as Mantis said they're not that similar. Anyway mine is just for school and my folio so It doesn't really matter. Thanks anyway. As for your thoughts keep them coming I really need a good ending as in what happens to the guy like how he escapes or doesn't something like that. And I really never wnat the whole experiment to be explaineed fully, like it was a mad doctor or something I just wanted that to be a mystery I really want to focus on the paranoia stuff and the fact that this guys paranoia could be all a big shamble...is it real or is he just making it up in his mind...something like that. Thanks again guys and keep them posts coming.

Boy, that is a really freaky concept! I like it.

Maybe you could structure it so the guy goes into the phone booth and finds the phone dead. He tries to leave, but the booth won't open! Suddenly, the phone rings! Some evil voice tells him that the booth has been sealed and he better do exactly as he is told or he will be left there and he will run out of air!

Now that I've gotten that far, I am totally stumped as to what he must do. One idea that has been done a lot, but which has many, many variations, is that he is a powerful and worldly man who must be reminded that he does not control as much as he thinks. It worked for Michael Douglas in "The Game," right?

Good luck!
