Why would the mob put out a contract on a prostitute, i.e., pay a hit man to kill her? In the story I'm working on right now the prostitute survives a killing in a motel room. The audience is supposed to believe that the target of the hit is the guy she was with and that the only reason the hit man continues to pursue her is that she is a witness. But at about page 50 we learn that she, not the guy, was the real target. Why?

The reason I am working on so far is that she is a high class call girl who is paid by having money deposited in her bank account. The same account is used by the mob to launder money(without her knowledge), but through a slip-up by the (mob owned)bank she is sent a statement that shows what is really going on, so they decide to kill her. THIS SOUNDS TOO CONTRIVED! Anybody got any better ideas?

Here's an idea that I don't like at all, but it might give you an idea:
One of the mob guys wants to pull out. He runs into her at a bar, and neither one knows who the other person is. They start to like each other, and he finds out she who she is. Then he tells her to be careful or something.

I like yours, but I can see how it is kinda contrived.

She's a blackmailer of her married, repeat business johns and she tried to blackmail the wrong person.

One of her regular customers is married to someone with mob influence. Who says only men can have power in the underworld?

She knows something revealed from a drunken john or found something out while looking through his pockets.

She left her mafia sponsored pimp and has to be made an example.

A while ago there was a raid. She and her john were caught in the act, the john was carrying a load of drugs. Seeing how quickly she got back out on the streets she's mistaken for an informant that set up a sting or testified for a reduced sentence.

Thanks for all the input but most of this won't work because this much is already locked in:

  • The story starts with the hit (the hook).
  • The love interest is the cop investigating the hit. He's the one who figures out that she is the real target.
  • She's a high class call girl who works for thousands per night, and not that often. She would not go to a bar to pick someone up.
  • She is not aware of why they are after her.
  • She does not have a pimp.

perhaps one of her clients was a lower end mob guy, but was recently wacked because he talked too much about "family business," perhaps some major event perhaps, they are cleaning up his well known associates he might have spoken to..?

wow, that's a touch one actor...

In such a situation, I would probably do something like this:

The prostitute takes a job for the mob boss. However, since he is getting on in years, the mob boss has a few problems that a truckload of viagra couldn't help.

The prostitute could make fun of his problem or something at this point. Or, she could just sneak out as the mob boss goes into a fit or rage and storms into the bathroom.

Either way, the mob boss would then want her killed. The sheer embarrassment in his powerful position would drive him to do it. Such a disgrace cannot go unpunished. It hits on that whole underworld honor thing. Maybe it could be considered a weakness. Who knows?

Anyhoo, that's probably what I would do.
