Okay, here's the thing; yesterday was my birthday and I recieved a DVD player as the present from my parents. (Some folks, eh?) I noticed it said on the player that it would play Video CDs, so I had this idea.. what if I were save all my movies with a certain "VCD" codec, and burned the movies onto a CD (after all, the burner says you can make video CDs with it). They would play on my DVD player, right?

Please tell me if I'm wrong, and if it would work, then what is the codec i would use to compress these movies? I have Divx;-), and I can make .asf, .avi, .mov, and mpeg files. Which would work?

Thanks!

The codec for vcd is mpeg-1,resolution is 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL).

Not all dvd players will play cdr media, what make dvd player do you have?.

are you sure the resolution is that low, can it be set higher? Also: If I'm making a Video CD could I just burn an MPEG1 .avi file to a CD or do I have to use a special program?

Hi,

The resolution is like stated above (as far as I remember), but some players (usually SW ditos) can handle non-standard VCDs.
There is also something called SVCD with different specs (i.e. higher quality, higher bitrate, etc.). Problem with these is (IMHO) mainly that they can only hold ~36 minutes of movie (whereas VCD can hold about 70 minutes)...
To burn Your mpeg to CD You should use a special format which is supplied by burner programs like Easy CD Creator Deluxe (i.e. not the free one), Nero and also WinOnCD (which I haven't tried though). Easy CD support menus and such fancy stuff which Nero does not (although it supposedly will in the next version).Nero do support SVCD though, which Easy CD does not.

The quality of a VCD is generally like VHS but due to the compression blocky artifacts may appear making it look even worse than the good old VHS tape. SVCD is a lot better (IMHO) qualitywise.

More on this can be found on the net and sites like www.vcdhelp.com etc.

I've just recently looked into this and finally found a solution I like. I'm more than happy to help...

Rico
