I am hoping to produce a movie in 16:9 for a dvd version and also 4:3 for a VHS version.
Which should I shoot in? 4:3 and crop the top or 16:9 and crop the sides?

16:9 crop the sides, if you shoot 4:3 and crop the top, thats pointless, you're just cutting off the image. but if you shoot 16:9 and crop the sides, you can still do pan&scan.

If you watch a movie at the cinemas, the screen is considerably longer than your average tv set in comparison to the height. When transferring to video, there are two methods of adjusting the movie's size for the TV. One is letterboxing, which I'm sure you know of. Then, there's Pan and Scan, where it is adjusted to fit to the exact size of your TV by rather than simply cutting off the edges, it centres more directly on the action. Some directors put little things in the background of their movie, and when you pan and scan it - you miss some of the cute little bits and pieces the director may have originally put in his/her movie, because the real action or important bit of that scene is elsewhere...

Hope this helps..

Go for 16;9,because most of the general public dosen't like 3;4 because they don't know that you're getting more on the sides, they just think they're getting ripped off,and I kind of find 3;4 annoying. Just my opinion though
