Can someone in the know tell me how the Blender rendering engine stacks up against the 3D Studio Max rendering engine in terms of quality? Is there a difference, or is it 100% in the hands of the modeler/animator? Thanks for any and all help, Ghang! |

I started out using blender and recently switched over to max. The overall package, 3ds max is better. Its set up a bit better. After getting used to max, i definitely like the setup and features alot more. As far as quality. As most 3d programs, its in the hands of the user. I've seen renders and animation from blender thats just as good as some i've seen out of max. Blender is a capable 3d program, but max is still better. Plus, its more the norm and you'll be able to find more max users if you need help. Later Kevin |

Thanks, Gr|fter.Ironically, although I'm a Windows PC user, I've gotten quite used to the Blender interface and have really started liking it, spelling mistakes and criptic terminology notwithstanding ; ) However, I hear that Max has a bigger feature set (is this true?) and I have a suspicion that the overall render quality might be better. One more question, for anyone in the know (and whose seen both, like Gr|fter has): a lot of the Blender features require a very clear knowledge of the internal workings of Blender and some guesswork, because the documentation does not say very much about them. Is Max better documented, particularly when it comes to obscure features that must be explained and then demonstrated by example (the Blender manual is pretty bad with Radiosity, for example). All help appreciated, Ghang! |

Max´s standard renderer doesn´t do radiosity at all. still the max render engine is better in my opinion. esp. since v3 is out. the new blur-algorythms and the new shader-architecture rock. |

I personally have gotten better results out of max than blender. They both have things/options I really like. Blender is WAYYYYY better on memory. But i'm still learning max though. After using max, i just find it cleaner and setup up better. But you can still get excelent results out of both.Later, Gr|fter |

As for documentation, max has lots. 3 manuals (2 reference and tutorial + online versions) and they are big! (like 20 cm thick combined) I have found the documentation to be better than most programs. Good, interesting tutorials that are for the most part, easy to follow. |

i think i am beginning to see prism's frustration with everyone talking and "getting" max.kinda like the 50 posts of capture cards this forum gets everyday. 3dsmax is fine and dandy. blender is ok too. each have there pros and cons. 3dsmax's being it's $3000. |
