this may start the age old argument again, heheh! i don't think either is better, they're just different in what they have to offer. everyone, and every company has their preference. |

Mac is probably best for editing (After FX / Final Cut Pro, etc.) But for CG, PC is probably better. And I don't give a dam about 3DS MAX. I think it's overrated, and you can do some kick-butt CG with lower-end programs like Hash A:M. Isaiah ------------------ Isaiah, "Sound Guy" Eyre www.iEyre.com |

i wouldn't worry that much about brand although i would stay away from ones that run only their own software. what you want to think about is disc speed and space, amuont of ram and processer mhz. anything to do with video eats up vast amounts of disc space so try for a mimium of 20 gigs, at least a 300mhz processer and 128 megs of ram. as far as software goes Mac is currently in the lead but PCs are getting better and they are more available. i actually chose a G3 because it was available at a good price. Software is really more important that the computer you choose because hardware is developing in sophistication almost monthly but software can be updated relitively simply and cheaply. if you can afford it i'd go with a G4 that comes from the factory set up as i mentioned before or better. that should start at about 2600 bucks and comes with firewire already installed. if not just get the most powerful computer you can afford. |

ermmm. a) 3d Studio Max rules. it is not overrated. i dont say AM is bad. for the money you get indeed a VERY good program. but Max is simply a lot better. max is not aimed towards amateur/indy productions tho. still it is better. and not overrated. esp with magma (max r4) beeing released. take a look at the features. YO YO YO i scream.b) Macs rock, no question. but in general you need more money to run mac in such an environment. i work in a sound-studio and we just got a new mac for use with protools. can you imagine that this puter (PowerMac G4 Duak 450) is 8000 bucks ? i can get a Dual 800 Pc at a HELL more cheap. still it is a damn good puter. and very fine for editing. dont even think about doing cg (at least if you really thought about your topic ( PRO cgi). none of the Pro programs are currently available for mac-os. that is not just mac. for editing tho. it is a fine puter. considering the built in fire-wire. well nice of course. but you canīt put it to tape after editing (unless you got a modified Cam, or a DV-VCR) wich results in even more $$$. i luv mac, but i wouldnīt buy one if i had to pay it . |

3dsmax is not widely used in the film industry. it has been here and there, but it's not as common as say- maya, or other crap like that. at least from what i can see.and yes, 3dsmax can be good, just like lightwave, but you have to know how to use it, takes a while to learn. |

When you get into the really high end effects houses, virtualy no Macs are used for 3D work. None of the big 3D programs (Maya, Softimage, Side Effects, Renderman) are available for Mac. However, all of them have now been ported over to the PC. Even SGI is making PCs! Macs are sometimes used for 2D work. Several shots from the Star Wars special edition were compsited on Macs, but no 3D stuff.
