hey guys, i was watching a behind the scenes thing on The Patriot (mel gibson movie) and in it they showed a scene where they were supposedly walking towards charlestown but in actuality towards a forest, somehow they removed the trees and replaced them with a scene of charlestown. if you know what i'm talking about , how can i do this?? i have after fx and premiere. thanks!!

That can be tough! I guess in this case it'w what they call "rotoscoping". It isn't easy, but it often depends on the kind of scene you're doing. I did some rotoscoping in the "Die!" video which you will find on my videos page - http://www.iEyre.com/videos
(Obviously the gun I'm holding is CG)
But then, putting CG in the background of a scene is a whole different story. I have yet to be successful in that kind of scene.

there is no other way that i know of unless u used a few layers of transparincy's and then motion tracked the spots that u dont want to be transparent or something? are u sure they didnt just green screen it???

they painted out the background and compositied in another background? whoa, now i'm sure that took some work.

hey, if you have the time, paiting out the background of every single frame would work. :P

or, get some lights and try on a single color wall. i did, it didn't turn out half bad.

need a good key-er though!

if you have strata media paint use the stecil function and roughley outline around the people with say a bright blue for each frame and then use the bucket and fill the area on the outside of the blue outline with the stecil video and then cromakey the blue outline and make a soft edge and then u will have it. But since not many people have media paint chances are u have no idea waht im talking about

That must have been done with rotoscoping. Most people here seem to think that since rotoscoping is so much work that must not be the way they did it. The truth is that rotoscoping is still a MAJOR part of FX work. Check the credits, you're bound to see some rotoscope artists listed on every FX film.
Directors know this kind of thing can be done in post, so when they feel like changing a shot by don't have a green screen handy, they do it anyway, and the poor rotoscope artist has to deal with it.
Rotoscoping is a mind numbing experience and can have you working on the same shot for days trying to get it just right.

there´s actually the possibility to do bluescreening without a bluescreen. that particular case wasn´t done tho i think. but the proggie is called "film-knockout" and a video/motion version of corels knockout (wich is only for stills) i tried it (the still version) and it works REALLY damn good. actually it turned out better then standard blue-screening in premiere. (knockout without and premiere WITH bluescreen).
