Does any one have any ideas on how to make a decent steadicam like contraption?

i use a poorman's steadicam... my tripod after a bit of practice, i get surprisingly smooth moves (not as smooth as a steadicam, but smoother than handheld). i keep the legs contracted, hold it by the base of the head and use one of the legs as a handle. i think it also helps to have it to the side, instead of directly in front of you.

LOL!!! Smooth as butter on a- bald monkey. That's from Veggie Tales, isn't it?

Look at the tomato. Isn't it sad? He can't dance. Poor tomato. He WISHES he could dance, like the cucumber. Free and smooth.. but he- he CAN'T..

LOL, sorry.

...But yes, I use my tripod as a steadicam too. Works pretty good, from what I can tell. I keep my (tripod) legs open, s it seems to distribute the weight a little more evenly all around. I'll have to try sketchman's method.

Here is a link to a site that has quite a bit of info on how to construct a glidecam. http://w1.226.telia.com/~u22604215/stabilizerdollylinks.html

Something similar to a steadycam is called a "pogocam" and it's basically a tripod, like you guys are saying, but you add a little counterweight at the bottem to smooth things out. You can even do fairly good crane shots with a ladder and a assistant! It works!

I love vegietales! Over the summer, my church had a Veggie tales VBS and asked the adults to help in the skits, I got to be larry and wear a huge costume. I got to talk in that high-pitched squeak/lisp too. It was really funny. Then all the kids in my grade level I taught at VBS were like "Larry's my leader!" It was funny.

Kinda scares me when kids like to dress up as talking vegetables with buck teeth and freckles.

It was for the kids! They all loved it, and I like acting anyway, so it was fun.

I recently bought a monopod for a trip I was taking (didn't want to mess with the extra two legs). I found that it greatly improved the hand held stability of my small camcorder when used as a shoulder extension when held be the center of the shaft to walk and turn the camera. I even used it on a winding staircase in a castle (a few actually)

PS Only used it as a monopod once.
