http://www.skycrane.com it's a little on the steep side for most folks here, but then again i hear XL1, GL1, thrown around a lot. they have some less expensive models, and it offers pan and tilt...if you need a crane, perhaps you can rent one of these locally if you cant afford it. eggy, in case you didnt get my mail, you need to see this later TOm

I had found that crane, and it is very cool. They updated their page though with new cranes. That little handheld one is pretty cool. Course, it's about 350 bucks...Well, I want the 8 foot one anyways. How much do you think it would cost to make one? |

i've been figureing that out...checking prices at places like sharirosupply.com (they sells the aluminium tube...i think it would come in someplace around $100 (USD) so $5000 canadian you'd need some tools, especailly if you wanted to do the adjustable counterweight thing...anyone got access to a milling machine? most of it can be done with a drill press and a saw. a swivel caster wheel could be used for the pivot area once you cut the wheel off, and would provide the rotational and vertical movements. i havent found any pulleys in my stack of catalogs that would work yet, but i'm sure i will find something. i am really thinking of building one similar to this, it'd end up costing a little more then one built out of PVC or similar materials, but not that much, and i think you could make it "modular" so you could extend it by adding a section to lengthen it. mount that thing on a dolly and you are totally set! I plan on getting to a place that sells aluminuum stock locally sometime next week to price everything...perhaps its time for me to build one of these and quit rambling on. later TOm

i was thinking rather than the pulley set up they have maybe a rod an bell crank system with levers at the control end. if you ran the ros through aluminum tubing it shouldn't flex and the levers would give you fair control and sence my camcorder is under 20lbs i'd use round rather than square tubing for the shaft and barbel type weights to adgust the counter balance. i'll bet with a little help from some hotrod friends of mine who are good at fabricating it wouldn't cost over 100 bucks. i'll bet if you used the spindle off a pinto or vega (whith are vary light) modified them slightly (added a platform to the huband a few other things) that you could easily make a head on the end of the boom that would pan and tilt without a lot of mechining that would be accurate and stable. |

I need to go down to Home Depot and check out the prices. I think I might be able to throw together one for under $100, or at least I hope so. With the skateboard dolly you most definately would be set! Gotta make a good one that lasts, though... |

Speaking of dollies. Is anyone planning in the future to make a dolly that you can ride on? I'm definitely going to make one sometime, but I was wanting to make one that you can actually stand on. |

yeah, the one that this crane is going to go onto is going to have that feature or strength.what about building a tripod, i wont have the cash to buy one after i get this crane together and the new camera to use with it. Speaking of which, got any good sites with good prices on DV cams? capt video, email me, i'd like to get some ideas on your system. i think it'll work well, but i'd like to hear more about one of the controls that you may be thinking of. i added a bunch of crane sites to the movies link page... later TOm ------------------ What everyone seems to forget is that once we look past race, religion, gender, and all that, everyone on this planet is first and foremost... ...a PERSON LINKS(added to11/15) |

i'd be happy to Tom but i'm not sure how to get e-mail addresses for members here i know other people do it cause they've e-mailed me before. so as soon as you can tell me how to get them or what your's is i'll e-mail you. i spoke with a racing buddy of mine and he said he'd help me fabricate it. |

There is a company in England who make very inexpensive dollies, cranes, jibs, booms etc, even ride-on dollies.Their website is I think www.b-hague.co.uk Do not be alarmed if the homepage talks about industrial knitting machinery - you are in the right place - they make that too, oddly enough. |

ACE - By a dolly that you can ride on, do you mean one that the camera operator rides on and controls the camera, while a grip pushes or pulls it? If so, then the dolly that I have built does that. It has a swinging arm on it, that has a seat attached, for the camera operator. The arm swivels around the main post, on which the camera is mounted. The dolly rides on PVC tracks, and actually, if for some reason that you need to do so, can have more people riding on it than just the camera operator. There is standing room for maybe one other person, a sound guy perhaps. You can check it out on my website at: http://hometown.aol.com/pyroman451/dolly.html ------------------ "May the Force be with you."
