I haven't been to tihs forum in a long time, but seeing has how I'm starting work on another film project (due in a month!) I'm probably going to be asking a lot more questions here.I'm just about to start writing the script, but I have a problem. I want this movie to be set in modern-day Jerusalem. I live 700 miles from the nearest desert. The film is set mostly indoors, but how do I create the illusion that this movie is not set in my hometown, but instead in a foreign city? I was thinking about using stock footage, but of course that's not possible |

stock footage isnt possible? uh, ok if you say so. well, perhaps attempting to recreate costumes, the look of homes there, that kind of thing would help. also try to add lights outside any windows with gels that would recreate that look, or just go on a road trip...this doesnt sound too helpful, does it? later Tom ------------------ What everyone seems to forget is that once we look past race, religion, gender, and all that, everyone on this planet is first and foremost... ...a PERSON LINKS(added to11/15) |

I know someone here will suggest bluescreening it, but I dont think that would end up looking convincing at all. It will have to be a physical effect. Try to get a large backdrop with a photo of whatever you need and have it be set up behind windows, doors, etc. With proper lighting it would be unoticable as an effect-which is what you want. |

do you live near a beach? As long as you don't get the water in the shot beaches make somewhat convincing deserts |

When I said stock footage isn't possible, it's because this is a zero-budget project, and what little money I have is already going to be used to get costumes and props - stock footage is extremely expensive, isn't it? |

i know we have some folks here from an arid region, hey we might even have some from the middle east i'm sure that someone would be willing to send you some footage if needed, right guys? perhaps a trade for some footage of your area.check in the CC for some "stock" topics later TOm ------------------ What everyone seems to forget is that once we look past race, religion, gender, and all that, everyone on this planet is first and foremost... ...a PERSON LINKS(added to11/15) |

if you could get ahold of some sand from a place that sells concrete maybe you could build a table top miniture landscape with 3 or 4 ft dunes built ot of chickenwire paper mache' glue and sand. then layer it in with bluesrceen or if you don't have bluescreen tape your actors from the waist up, tilt the landscape up slightly and use forced perspective to create the illusion of them walking in the desert. |

Hmm for the indoor shots i think photos ouside the windows would be expensive, because they have to be big. Just let the windows be overexposed or set up some lamps outside (you know big lamps..damn i cant remember the english word), if there is not enough light outside. If you have Aftereffects, i think Vision Production did it before. Just make the white light outside a yellow light so it looks more like "desert light".Great film location ! Just my two cents Oh i just said the same as Crazy Lou, sorry i am too confused today! [This message has been edited by MarcArts (edited 12-03-2000).] |

As far as stock footage being expensive, remember that anything shot by the gov't with taxpayer's money (that isn't top secret) is in the public domain. The problem is finding it. A 20 minute tape may cost about $20.00For more on stock footage visit the Video University online at: http://videouniversity.com We did have troops in the Middle East, right? Someone must have taken some footage. Good Luck ADOM |
