I have watched the Cell and Pitch Black DVD recently and they spoke of a process they called bleach pass. They said it could be done to the negative or in post. I love that effect.

Is there any way to reproduce that effect on Digital video on my desktop?

How is it done at the proffesional studios?

Bleaching is a step in film developing that removes the extra silver crystals from the film. If you do a bleach bypass, you skip this step and the extra silver is not removed. This makes the negative denser (less light can pass through) so when it is printed as a positive, you get the opposite effect and it becomes brighter. It also makes the colours less saturated. To simulate this in post, you need to de-saturate the colours and turn up the brightness. Messing with the gamma might do the trick too.

Didn't they do something like that in saving Private Ryan, or did they do something else?

Im not sure exactly what they did in Saving Private Ryan, but they left only about 40% of the original colour

All times are ET (US)
