For my new pet project I need a scen were a car is escaping from two cars that are in its way. It will be in a parkingly lot and the cars will be starting up, not highspeed. Since this is a very low budget movie I don't have enough cash to buy a couple extra cars to toss around (I tried buying one for 5$ during thanksgiving but alas, to no avail) I've already thought of two possible ways of creating the illusion. I thought of these tonight and I won't be able to try them out for awhile due to weather and trips. I'm just looking for feedback and other posible solutions. The first mehtod I thought of was to have an exterior shot of the car approaching the barrier and addin somer acceleration sund FX, then cut to an interior shot of the vehicle being hit. I'm think I can have the moving vehicle drive kind of close and then get some friends to rock the car like it got hit. The other option was to show another shot from the exterior, but from the side opposite the ipmact and do the same rock the car deal. any ideas? |

You want to be really careful when messing with moving cars. I wouldn't suggest having any of them moving at the same time or toward people ready to rock the other cars. I do suggest this: Lots of close ups. Lots of impact sound. Lots of zooming and intercutting. Showing the before and after. Show your driver heading for the road block. Show him "speeding" away from the two cars pushed apart (rocking & maybe some smoke). Bridge the whole thing with the sound of impact. Reactions shots wouldn't hurt either.ADOM PS ECU's of the tach at high RPM shot while the car is in nuetral intercut with the car passing the camera can help the illusion of speed. |

The cars would efinetaly be moving at the same time, The people would be on the opposite side of the car and the car would just drive by closely, with the right angle there could be plenty of room. Thanks for the other advice. |

all of ADOM's suggesstions, except, no zooming! zooms are evil! and they make you're video productions suck! zoom to set up a shot but not during a shot. |

If you have a dolly or a wheelchair you can dolly in instead of zooming (or better yet dolly in and zoom out ala JAWS), but tightening the shot can help create the illusion of more movement.Wide angle and zoom lenses can also help you alter the depth of fields you are working with to make your cars look closer together. Thanks for the feedback. I've got some good reaction shots in mind, and I'll definitely use the depth of field tricks. On another note, I noticed in the movie American Beauty that they gave the appeareance of looking through a video camera by getting rid of all depth and washing out the colors a bit. Is there anything that I can do while shooting to reverse that, make video look more like film? |

Ok this does involve zooming which I am also not a fan of, but if done right it doesn't look like a zoom, and actually looks good. drive your car towards whatever you plan to "hit" make your camera angle looking out of the front window (ie drivers POV) and as you get close to whatever it is you are hitting, zoom in towards it really fast. switch shots right after that add some car crash noises and it's pretty workable. |

Another way to show the cars hitting would be to have them start together, then go in reverse and have everyone do the scene backwards, then in post reverse the clip and maybe mess with the speed a little bit if needed. Then mix that with all of the other shots, too. Just an idea. |

Hey, Tek, in American Beauty, it really was a digital camera being used, and the actor who played the weird teenager actually controlled it during the movie. |
