Does any one know how the visual effects in the flashback scenes of Ridley Scotts Gladiator were achived?
I'm talking about the washed out look(I'm think low colour saturation plussome kind of filter...)Also the high contrast ratios between light and shadowed areas. The best example of this is the trees on the path to his house and the wide shot of the wheat fields moving in the wind.. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

oh, where it's really gray-ish?
that is a cool effect...like when he's walking through the field and all you see is his hand in the wheat?

according to cinefex magazine this is how they did it:
film has 4 layers, red, green, blue, and the silver halide (which is removed in the processing). for the flashback scenes, they did a bleach bypass to keep the silver. then in post, they composited the blue layer into the green layer, and then with the new image threw the hue all the way back to eliminate most of the reds.

you could probably just mess around with the color saturation and get it pretty close?

how stupid of me... i forgot my solution for low budgets...
i've tried it once where i went into premiere, applied a "levels" filter onto my clip and brought my reds down to around 64. then increase the contrast by around 10% and reduce the saturation by about 50%.
