Hope io dont lose any karma points by posting this, or piss off the mods, but i have an interesting new effect. We were filiming a lightsabre fight, and we had to have someone make a force jump up about 6 feet, and belive me, my actor cant do 6 feet verticle. So, we had him stand on the 6 foot platform and jump off backwards, land on his hanuches, then back wards. When thje film is played in reverse, it looks amazing. I hope this is okay to discuss, cause i would like ot know how others have faired with reverse effects. DONT JUMP FROM ANY HIEGHT YOU DONT FEEL COMFORTABLE! |

As long as we're talking about reasonable distances here, we won't be violating the safety guidelines. The rpoblem with reversing a physical stunt is that it often looks like it was reversed. You may have to do various tests (perhaps at slightly lower heights for ease) to discover how your launch or landing give you away and work on choreography to eliminate or reduce these tell tale actions. You can't do much about gravity, just adjust the starting and finishing actions to look more like they should. For refernce sake, shoot the actor leaping up onto a shorter plat form, about as much as he can manage. This will help give you aditional insight as to what someone looks like as they strain to take off in a leap as hard as they can. Use caution with any kind of jumping and incorporate padding into the set if at all possible. Even if a person doesn't become badly injured, you don't want your actors banged and bruised up. Unpaid actors will suddenly become unreliable and reluctant to shoot when you beat them up on set! ------------------ Jeff F - Moderator Magic and FX Amazing the Masses |

Thank you for the leeway jeff f. anyhoo, the effect looks really good, and we have several others in which the actors fight in revers up top, then the actor jumpos down and runs back wards, whewn played in reverse, it appears he cvan defy gravity

doing stuff in reverse is so much fun. i got his by a car for a movie, and that's how i did it. you can also do jumps by rotoscoping/bluescreening. check out wade's SW fight clip in the trailer forum. |

The real problem with jumps/landings that your play in reverse is the problems with acceleration. When you jump off of something you go from 0 to 9.8 meters/second squared starting from the time you push off from your platform but when you jump up onto something you reach your maximum velocity as soon as your feet leave the ground. From that moment on you will start to slow down. Once your velocity reaches close to zero you will seem to hang in the air for a moment before you begin your downward fall. If you were jumping up onto something, it is then that you would position your legs for your landing. To simulate this in reverse you will need your actor to simulate all of the movements of landing before he jumps off of the platform. He will have to jump upward and back at the same time. It's not easy but with some experimenting you will get it right. Try filming someone jumping up, onto a table top then play that in reverse so you can study the dynamics of landing in reverse. |

Try watching the 6 million dollar man as well (Sci-Fi Channel syndication)They achieved his jumps in the same way. They also made massive use of "slo mo" so that the aforementioned velocity paradox would be less noticeable. You know what he said about take off being faster than landing and vice verse.ADOM
