--I am not asking about makeup--

Simple Q = is there such a thing as shooting for DVD or is film shot normally and specail things are done in Post.

Reason for asking

I was recently in a class where a makeup artist (see Disclaimer) said that applying makeup when shooting for (or on, but I think she meant for...did she?) DVD you must be very subtle with the makeup.

I didn't know there was such a thing as shooting on/for DVD, is there?

did she specifically say "DVD" or did he mean video in general? if i remember correctly makeup differs between the video and film because they both react to light differently. film needs a lot of light, and therefore makeup has to be a bit exaggerated so it shows up under all the light. yes, makeup should be subtle for video.
you're really asking 2 questions. when shooting film, most filmmakers will shoot "TV safe", which means to have the action framed so that when the image gets chopped up to fit on a smaller sized TV screen, the main subject is still there.

One thing I have noticed about DVD is that the picture is so clear it can make the make-up effects look bad.

I was watching True Romance, and the part after Patricia Arquette got beat up and she is sitting on the bench with Cristian Slater, there is a close up of her face. I found her beat up face to look very very fake. I never noticed this on the VHS copy but it looks really bad on DVD because DVD is too good.(make sense?)

I don't know but maybe this is what she means?

Yeah other than the make-up , some things are more noticeable in the clarity that dvd has .

But the only way to truly shoot for dvd would be with of course digital equipment , or just a digitally created movie . So far i've only seen this done in cartoons ( a bugs life , toy story 2 ) where thay use the origional digital copy and put it right to the dvd .
