Does anyone know if there is a way to do lightsabres as a physical effect? or no?

In the original series, the physical sabers were wooden swords with the relective tape made by 3M that goes on road signs. The tape reflects light back to the source. I saw untouched pics of the sabers from the first series and the reflective quality was pretty impressive even before rotoscoping.
give it a try!

get a solid plastic tube and hold a light up to the bottom of it. if you look at it in the dark, the tube will be illuminated and it will look like a lightsaber.

Okay- the Scotchlite they had in 1976 was no where near as good as it is now. The technology now exists to make those little glass beads even smaller and far more reflective- and get this- is now comes in a sticker! a Sticker!! As well it comes in many colours. just apply that to your wood dowl jammed into your silver painted pepper mill, and have a light source close to your lens, like say a flourescent GE circle light around the whole thing, or a ring of frosted floods and viola! Freakin' in-camera lightsabres. If the light's bright enough- you could probably even shoot in daylight (okay, maybe dusklight- or overcast conditions)-if you're very close to the action.

BTW-you get Scotchlite from the makers at 3M, or at your local automotive accessories store. Awright?
