Hey whats with the likeastory website? with all the graphic designers, animators etc why does the site look so dull and boring??Is there a way where I could organise a way that every member in the likeastroy webboards help to spruce it up? |

I once offered Webmaster Dale for me to redesign the website for free, but he declined... Beats me why, but he's got his reasons! Either way, this is a kick-butt message board, regardless of what the front page looks like. It's better than a really incredibly flashy site with nothing cool to do, isn't it? Here is a link to an explanation by Webmaster Dale regarding why it looks like this and the fact that it IS going to change somewhat with the new system after the first of the year. http://www.likeastory.com/boards/Forum21/HTML/001439.html But I sort of like SirGahrjyn's explanation...."if it ain't broke...." Doesn't need fixing. It's about CONTENT anyway and not what it looks like here. Who really CARES what it looks like? The information is the value, not the presentation of that information. Pretty is just that... pretty. But functionality is primary too along with what the board contains. People KNOW what they can get here in the way of information. And as you see from a few responses, nobody is all that interested that it isn't some slick, fancy graphic-laden web site that has nothing to offer. It is the best thing there is of it's kind on the Internet bar none. I'd rather find some non-descript web site that looked just OK that I could get a LOT of information from, than a web site that was all glitz and glamour and was nothing more than a flash-in-the-pan. Just my opinion. FXMan Moderator |

on top of which, for those of us who spend a lot of time on the site, the extra download times would soon start to mount up. |

Keeping it simple has a lot of wisdom. With the spotty availability and reliability of high speed access in many parts of the country (some cable companies in cities around me are loosing cable ISP users - bad service), download time is still a factor. 5 - 10 years from now bandwidth may make page complexity a moot point, but (as usual) the fanfare has arrived long before the infrastructure is firmly enough in place to affect truly large numbers of people.Polls have indicated that most users respond negatively to changes in site design, so savvy Web Masters make their changes carefully and infrequently. They're best off fixing what isn't working for large numbers of users and modifying the rest in as minor a way as possible. Too dramtic a change can confuse infrequent visitors and scare them off rather than intice them to become regulars. Devotees are coming back regardless (they're already in love with the site), so new users should be the primary consideration in altering a look. It isn't the prettiest, but isn't overdone, and for some of us it's home. ------------------ Jeff F - Moderator Magic and FX Amazing the Masses |

Sorry to those who want things fancy, but I don't wish to be, nor pretend to be a graphic designer. There will be some changes coming to these webs soon (Jan 3rd 2001) , but sorry, they will not consist of fancy graphics or weighty - processor eating shockwave (those design fads in my opinion are like the internet masturbating and have proved to have very little usefulness in my book.) At any rate , Dale, unfortunately , still runs a very low-end personal computer system himself, hence his sites will not be challenging the processing power of anyone's 800mhz + computers out there with dedicated connections to the internet. I DO have some nifty plans for improving what I like best on the internet: "CONTENT". including:
- 1. An Articles Section
- 2. A Theatre Tech section.
- 3. Improvements on the Archives.
So Sorry folks, likeastory is not traded publicly, no huge staff with stock options. Just one very busy, usually broke, thespian/poet who automated discussion on some of his hobbies.------------------ Webmaster Dale (Administrator for Likeastory Forums.) |

Well Dale,Like you - and I already said it - CONTENT is far more than some fancy graphic laden site that has nothing to offer. But as the age old story goes, you can please some of the people some of the time, etc., etc. you know the cliche. I for one, think it's fine and you don't need to do a bloody thing to it. If people don't like the way it looks, just like has been said before, go start your own and see all the people flock to your site. But cram it with a lot of graphics and crap that means nothing then see how many people CAN'T stay connected because they too, don't have the high powered computers that are becoming more and more the requirement to run some sites. Leave it as it is and those who like it will support it and stay. Those who don't - who cares. FXMan Moderator

Ahhahahaha I KNOW THIS PLACE AINT BROKE! its a wonderfull message board but i just thought it would look great with different colours and some cool graphics (just replacing the ones we have now) one of the problems people have with websites is they make fancy websites and then realise that the images they made are huge hehe thats there problem for not knowing how to create an interesting site but still saving download time. "IF IT AINT BROKE IT DONT NEED FIXIN" (BUT CANT WE AT LEAST GIVE IT A PAINT JOB?) heheh hey msg me if you ever do because i already come up with some sketches for this place and besides why does this website need flash? its just a stupid program where amatures think there great because they can alpha fade a text body well wohoo! |

FXman, that sounded very hostile. I thought this was a place to exchange ideas and opinions. Someone offered to help with the color scheme for this board and you replied by becoming very defensive. Take a deep breath. Count to 10. Relax. |
