Exactly how much of a 720x576 PAL frame do I loose (ie, is not displayed on a TV) - and where is this loss? Is it bottom and left?

I will change from TV to TV. The is no way to know how much will be cut off. It's best to keep all important info like titles at least 30% in from the edges of the frame.

Perhaps I am talking about the DV capture size for PAL, is that different? I find it hard to believe that it is a diff loss on each TV, oh well... thanks guys.

Well, believe it or not there is! Try it for yourself! Test out LARGE tv's compared to very small tv's. Then test out projection tv's and compare that to a LCD projector etc. Not a great difference. If you run a title from one end to the other (exactly).. you will notice that it's going to have one part or the other cut off on different tv's! And thoes are the sad facts of life. What some capture cards do is output the video with a small amount of black space on each end so that it will appear to be full sized on a tv screen. You should also have adjustements for output with your capture card so that you can do your editing in any format and output it in a different size, etc.
