hey! I just ordered a brand new computer (it's not even here yet) and I was wondering about which program I should get. I was thinking either Final Cut Pro, Primere, or After Effects. I have the money for all of them and could use some advice. Pros and cons of each would be nice. Thanx a lot. |

I take it you are getting a MAC? If so go with Final Cut Pro i guess. If its PC get Premiere. Don't get After Effects until you get one of the other programs. AE is not a NLE and is used for compositing and adding effects. |

NLE stands for non linear editor, ie. the clips don't have to be edited in order (thus the non linear) part. In an NLE clips are brought into the computer (logging, capturing, digitizing, whatever you want to call it), then trimmed, put in their proper location, etc, and also some basic effects (like changing the color or brightness of a shot or doing stuff like bluescreen). There are two major editors for the mac. There's Premiere, which has been around for a while and doesn't exactly have the greatest reputation (buggy, weak DV support, hasn't been updated in a long time), but a new version is promised, and the program likely does have a future. And then there's Final Cut Pro, which is my personal favorite. Though it hasn't been around as long as Premiere (Final Cut Pro is at version 1.2.5, Premiere is at 5.1), the interface is much more refined and easier to work in, and it's generally more stable. Version 2.0 was announced at Seybold in September and will likely start shipping sometime in the next two months. The only drawback with FCP is the price tag, a hefty $999 US, $400 more than Premiere, but it is a significantly better program and worth the extra money. I know it seems like I'm one of those anti Premiere mac freaks (which is sort of true), but I have used Premiere extensively (two years with 4.1, another six months with 5.1c), and I really don't like it. Final Cut Pro is definitely the better choice ------------------ You are nothing! If you were in my toilet I wouldn't bother flushing it. Also, a couple other things about Final Cut Pro. 1.2.5 is slow, at least on an iMac DV. I've edited a 35 minute long movie in it without any troubles (and it looks great), but the speed (or lack of it) does get frustrating at times, especially with heavy rendering. The thing is that FCP was developed by Macromedia (and originally designed as a Mac/Win product) and sold to Apple at the last minute, who fixed the interface up and added the Apple badge. 2.0 is built entirely by Apple with an emphasis on speed, and the highlight of it is that there's real time rendering. Also, there's going to be DVD output and a ton of other features.------------------ You are nothing! If you were in my toilet I wouldn't bother flushing it. Well FinalCut Pro is an excellent program and some films now are edited with it. If you have the money, I really suggest you get it. Premiere is a little amateur and very buggy. Stay away from it!! Well good choice getting a G4 for your film editing! |

That film 'Dancer in the Dark' or whatever it's called was edited in Final Cut Pro, and it was nominated for a Golden Globe...2.0 will likely be out at MacWorld San Francisco in January (first week), and fail that it will be at MacWorld Toyko in March, I think. As I said earlier, Apple hasn't made any formal announcements since Seybold in September, the only thing to go on is that it's definitely coming out before Quicktime 5, which should be out soon (it's been in Beta since October) Great choice going with FCP, it should run great on a Cube. Let us know how it works out ------------------ You are nothing! If you were in my toilet I wouldn't bother flushing it. WHY MACS?? :-( You guys are shooting out money for these "things" and for what? They are slower then PC's, cant really upgrade them, not a lot of companies produce Mac products. Ahhh!! Only in the begining were Macs better for video/image editing. Today, PC's are far and high beyond MAC's!!!!!!!!! I have people that work at the Toy Box in Toronto Ontario, Canada. You guys might recognize the work from Chuckie (the newest one) and other films.. i cant remember. But they are a multi million dollar company and what do they use?? Im not sure... But, it isnt MAC's!! :-pSlippery Glue Productions (tomorrows films, today) |

We don't need another PC versus Mac debate. For PCs, many recommend Media Studio Pro over Premiere for stability. Premiere was designed for edting brief clips for multimedia & the web, it is trying to grow into a real film editor and is having growing pains. Avid did make an NLE for the PC. Macs have a more stable operating system than Windows PCs. Not perfect (there is a myth that Macs never crash: tell that to the author of Sad Macs, Crashes, and Bombs) but more stable even than Win Me. Windows.net may change this, but that is yet to be seen. If your pockets were deep enough you could thrash all of the above with an actual Avid system, but that isn't realistic for many people here. ------------------ Jeff F - Moderator Magic and FX Amazing the Masses | |
