how can i match the textures of a cliff wall and make a matte painting to fit it using the tetures? |

I presume you mean, you are going to film the top four feet and add what is 'under' this with a matte, yer? You could try using the clone tool in Paint Shop Pro to 'clone' what is already there, and so create the rest of the cliff. Not sure which angle you are filming from, but if it is above, you might want to think about gradually decreasing the saturation and sharpness as the cliff falls away into the distance. |

You could create a whole background using one of the terrain generators, then edit the image to mask out the area already covered by your live shot, and composite.I think Terragen makes good-looking cliffs and mountains. It would take little work to match the camera angle of your live shot. If your shot already includes a sky or other background objects, then the masking and compositing will be more complicated. To create a cliff texture from scratch, you'd need some sort of fractal generator to create the rock, then play with colors and materials to get it looking realistic. You'd also have to create some kind of mesh to apply the texture and then worry about lighting and positioning. I like terrain generators because they do all that overhead for you and let you design your terrain. | |
