this is probably a stupid question but i'll ask anyway. i have an old version of premier (like version 3 or 4) and i need to upgrade. i have never used after effects and don't really know much about it. is it like totally different from premier? what can it do that premier can't or what can premier do that after effects can't? i am stupid so thanx for the help. |

Get after effects. Getting down to the basics, premiere is used to take all your recorded video footage and edit it into a movie, while after effects is used to take small clips from the movie you made and make them look really good with special effects, 2d animation, and compositing. Its actually just a real expensive add-on to premiere, and since you already have premiere i would buy after effects - once you learn it there is nothing better. |

does any one else here think that it is stupid to not have upgrades from like premiere 4-5 an so on, i mean, i personnaly dont want to have to spend about 600 bucks so that i can have better quicktime compatability. we should have to pay once and then not have to buy the next version as soon as ours is obsolete.------------------ I was normal once..... I didn't like it. check my site [URL=http://novicepictures.8m.com[/URL]

that would be very helpful. can you run after effects as a separate program though? if not, does it work with premier 4 or just 5? i kinda need it as a separate program cause i lost my cd for premier (i said i was stupid) and it's on my old computer. i could go ahead and put after effects on my old computer but that would leave a total of about 5 megs of free hard drive space. not much to get my movies on there. |

Yes, AE will work without Premiere. |

Think of Premiere as a way of arranging your clips and Aftereffects as a way to compose or refine the individual clips. If you are planning on getting a new computer then you might want to wait. I know that if you buy and register Adobe's software, they usually offer dirt cheap upgrades for a few weeks after the newest edition comes out, but I don't think that will help you.------------------ What lurks just beyond the corners of the light? .... i already have my new computer. i have some crappy editing software on my new computer that can arange clips (and that's it) so can after effects take care of everything else (titling, fades, dissolves, other transitions, sound and music)? |

It will do titles , but not the fades. It is mainly for adding effects to the clips, not handling transitions between them.------------------ What lurks just beyond the corners of the light? .... I do. http://members.xoom.com/bloodwhip/
