Is there any decent video editing programs out there without spending $1000 on Adobe

well, adobe is only 600 i believe. but other alternatives...hmm... if ur just looking to cut video together with lotsa transitions, id try avid cinema. its pretty cheap. theres also ulead videostudio pro or somethin like that. i heard its pretty good too. but avid is like 100 bux, and the other ones like 300 or sumthin. u decide.

Thanks, I was looking at buying a Hawking firewire card and it comes bundled with MGI VideoWave III for $150. Does anyone know if this will be sufficient for doing the light sabre type special effects?

Don't buy a firewire card unless your camera has firewire ports on it.

I have mgi VideoWave III and it will do nothing as far as visual effects. It has a few transitions and the ability to crop your movies, removing the bad parts. I wouldn't suggest this program to anyone who is interested in visual effects as it has no cababilities. I have to say though that it piqued my interest enought to start doing other things and got me into premiere/photoshop/after effects. But over all this progam is for people who what to produce "family" recorded videos things such as reunions or birthdays ect.

Cheap software and hardware make cheep results. Buy a good 3ccd camera and a GOOD DV card like the Raptor.

Ummm, this is supposed to be a low budget forum, though, isn't it? I appreciate that 3CCD cameras are better, but I've yet to see a side by side comparison showing that they're A LOT better - at least purely in terms of having 3 CCDs; 3CCD cameras generally have better lenses etc as well; I guess the point I'm making is that it's getting to be fairly commonplace to see people saying "oh, get a 3CCD camera" as though single CCDs were awful...

...and as though we could all afford 3CCD cameras. theyre mostly prosumer cameras...which means lotsa $$$.

Is VideoWaveIII decent for basic video editing? Just cutting, moving, some transitions, text, etc.?

I appreciate everyones help, and I am on a severely limited budget, what I really want is the best for the pitiful amount of money I can spend. Does anyone know if Videowave III can export to Photoshop for Rotoscoping? Or if you are able to insert sound effects on specific frames? My movie has very few SFX, It is sort of a politicly incorrect cross between power rangers style fighting and an Ernest movie.
