I'm using a Pyro firewire card to capture video with Ulead. Then I use Premiere to make a .flm file to edit in photoshop. The .flm files are HUGE, 268MB for a 8 second clip.

I want to keep the quality and frame size the same as the originals so I can export the video back to my camera for playback on a tv.

I'm a newbie and was just wondering if these file sizes are common in the world of dv editing.

i feel your pain! i've had my share of problems with premiere, and yes, the .flm's are huge! the only advice i can give to cut down the file size is capture at a lower resolution...it'll cut down the file size incredibly....just out of curiousity, what resolution do you have your .flm at?

I believe the resolution is 720x480, made from an uncompressed avi. I don't want to loose any quality so it will look good when I send it back to the camera.

I guess its a good thing I picked up that IBM 34GXP hd!

fun isnt it!!! I had to edit a 60 second light saber scene, at full res. The kick was i had 3 DAYS to do it all!!!! Trust me it was not fun, and on the last night i worked from 5pm to 7:45 am WITHOUT SLEEP!!
Anyway youll always run into problems with that stuff. The files are INCREADBLY huge and take FOREVER to load, add blur, just do ANYTHING, try loading 30 seconds into one, it isnt fun! The best way to do it is break it down by camera cuts, this way you can get the light saber the proper width, with the proper blur (I.E. Close ups you need a line width of 30-40 but a far away or medium you only need 15, so if you rotoscop them together you wont get the blur correct) So if you cut alot use that method. If you dont switch angles much (which you should, like every 5-10 seconds) then make it into segment of 5 seconds.
