I'd say play it safe with Premiere 3 or LE. You might squeak by with a copy of 4 but don't expect a fast render time and 5 is just about out of the question

Version 5.1 should be fine on his computer. It will be slow, but so would all the other ones. I used to use Premiere 5.1 with my Cyrix 200 with 32 megs of RAM, everything ran smoothly. (I've heard of people runnining Premiere 5.1 on P110s!) Premiere 5.1 may actually work better on his machine because it makes better use of the RAM instead of solely relying on the hard disk. His main consern should be the data rate at which he captures his video. A lower data rate would not only use less hard drive space, but it would also be less taxing on the processor.

I don't know what hard drive he has, but 320x240 @ 800 kb/sec should work fine and will output at about VHS quality. If he wants to capture full screen video (640x480 @ 3 MB/sec - NTSC) he should definitely consider getting a new computer. I am currently working on a AMD 400 with 128 megs of RAM and a 7200 rpm hard disk. This isn't a great machine by today's standards, but it's all you'll need.

BTW- Memory is getting cheap again. The best upgrade your friend could make would be to get himself some more memory (esp. good if you need to quickly Preview a clip in Premiere 5.1). You can buy 64 megs for under $90.

Hope this helps

Thanks very much FunkyMunky, I'll tell my mate, I thought the later versions would be better but I though I'd just check, thanks for the advice
