After Effects is mostly for compositing, similar to what you would do with the S tracks in Premiere. Look at any commercial or credit sequence where a lot of different graphics are flying around - that's After Effects (or the equivalent.) To that end, it's got great motion control and has infinitely more precise control of things like fades and placement over video or other graphics. Also, some plug-ins like Cinelook are for After Effects and not Premiere. Those are the advantages. The disadvantages are that it takes forever to render stuff, it's a RAM hog, and it's pretty difficult to master unless you're already familiar with things like Bezier curves. I like to use it for composited stuff like titles or graphics, but these are usually no more than a few seconds long, a minute at most. I avoid it whenever Premiere can do the same thing. As far as i know after effets is not the same thing as premiere, you use it after you have used premiere to put your movie together, so you can do better special effects and add filters and stuff. After Effects would definalty be worth having AS well as premiere.Dale Jenner |

ok. first off, there is no "VERSUS" issue. after effects and premiere are two entirely different programs, that do 2 entirely different things. if cutting video together is your desire, then premiere is your friend. if you choose to do special effects, compositing, GOOD blue screening, and so forth, then after effects is the program you need. bottom line: there is no comparison to be made...after effects is simply another tool to mess with images and is best used as a supplement to premiere. |

If I had to choose only one, Id go with after effects, becuase you can do a lot more with after effects, and you can do editing with after effects if you have to, its just kind of a pain. |

Thanks guys, thats pretty much what I was looking for. I guess if a cheap copy comes along I'll go for it. I'll probably just use premiere and photoshop until I outgrow them, then look into AE. | |
