ok guys....im running a pentium 166 with 80 megs of ram, and using photoshop...and boy, its running so slow i can barely stand it. my question is this: is there any way, other than upgrading my hardware, to speed up the program? and if not, i also have access to a p233 mmx with only 32 megs of ram on it. would it run faster on the that machine, even though theres less ram? help me out guys, im desperate.

Sparky, I'm not an expert compared to some of these other guys, but you need more power. That is seriously low ram and the processor is pretty low too. Of course you probably don't want to hear that, because that means spending more money. I'm sure you will get some other responses, so listen to what some of these other guys have to say. They'll help you out. Good luck with the project.

I am not sure why photoshop is running so slow. The only time my pc acted that way with photoshop was when I tried to import a filmstrip file. If that is what you are doing and it seems to take forever, go back and change the number of frames setting. Hope this helps.

i have a p200 mmx, with 32 mb of ram, and photoshop 5 runs fine. the mininum requirements for premiere, i think is 166 with 64mb of ram, but it would run really slow, especially when you compile it

Here are some tips that might(I stress might) give you a little bit more speed.
  • Make your swap file static by going into settings-> virtual memory -> then set it manually at like 200MB, make sure min and max is same so that computer doesn't take time to resize it.
  • Close all background programs you don't need. Systray and Explorer are required so don't shut those down.
  • Scandisk, defrag

I would recommend upgrading to a new motherboard, chip, and RAM(when prices drop) though. It is so cheap now(excluding RAM prices), 450Mhz AMD K6-2 or Celeron 366Mhz for ~$60, alright motherboard for ~$80, and 128MB of RAM(when prices drop) for ~$125. The RAM prices are already starting to drop back down to normal so this isn't a very expensive option.
