How can I make unexpensive breakaways props? All kinds of props from drink glass to window to furniture (tables, chairs). Also some bullets hits on floor and water. |

Check the FAQs here for info on breakaway "candy" glass.Breakaway furniture is generally constructed of balsa wood shaped and glued together similarly to regular furniture. Sometimes tooth picks are used to hold a chair leg on that needs to snap off right at a particular joint. Adding good sound effects in post adds tremendously to all of the effects you've mentioned. ------------------ Jeff F - Magic and FX Amazing the Masses

Making breakaway props usually require skill in mold making. Some casting materials for breakaway props I have used; plaster weakened with sawdust, hot-melt wax like paraffine, sugar glass and clay weakened or cast with water absorbing technique (meaning plaster mold that sucks the moisture from the clay, good for slip casting. When constructing breakaway props from balsa wood (and in matter and fact every other material) one should keep in mind that even if the thing will break itīs still damn hard to be hit in the head with. (Iīm speaking of experience.) Readily half-way-through breaked props can be used if the actors have the right kind of padding. For example tables or doors to be flown through. Many of these shots would feature a stunt person in normal movies_, but as we know a low budjet means also one thing; -cheap actors. In my opinion breakaways are used to often. I think hitting someone with an object that doesnīt break looks in many cases better. For this, props can be made soft and elastic. Klade |
