In advance I would like to thank you for your help. I am a boy scout ( the secret is out) and I am starting to work on my eagle project , which is the my last requirement before I can be an eagl scout.

Anyway I had this idea about doing something cool and fun rather then paint the church's fence. I thought of having a film marathon
where I would get movies donated from BlockBuster or somewhere. I would show the films in the theater of my local public high school. Instead of chraging money I would have the admission cost be a toy or something to give to a local charity called
Middletown Helps its Own.

I need information about the legality of showing movies to a large audience and charging them a toy to watch them for 12 hours. Any help would be apreciated

Be advised that I'm not an attorney.
Just an actor, writer, film-maker, slacker, web-geek, so take my word on this with a grain of salt:
First off there are restrictive laws that protect the releases from being shown to large audiences without permission, yet I think there may be some "precedents" which establish a tiny bit of leeway in copyright law for "benefits". You could email a hand-full of entertainment attorneys and ask them. Who knows? They might even tell you the info you need for free. Another idea may be to get your local theatre in on it. They have many distributer's contracts already in place.
Good luck
