Some people and I are making a haunted house for Halloween, and one thing we purchased for an eerie special effect was a mini fog machine. Now, the only problem we have is that we can't keep the fog on the ground...it just disperses all over the place, which prevents the guests from seeing anything. How could we keep the fog in a thick layer on the floor only?

P.S. One way we've considered is fans tilted downwards to the fog, but we're wary as to how well this would work.

Thanks for any input.

Fans wont help it will only spread the fog faster. For the effect you want it sounds like you need a dry ice fog machine. A regular fog machine is really made to create a haze everyware so you can see the beam of a light better. Like at a concert.

yea what you need to do is use thicker fog juice. the more glycerin you put in the thicker the fog gets, but the more stuffy it gets. the less glycerin you put in makes it less stuffy, but the but the fog gets less thick.

Do not change the fluid in the machine!!! If you use a thicker fluid it could "Spit" and put liquid on the floor, and it could burn out the heating element and destroy the machine! Take a 5 gallon plastic bucket and drill a hole in the side of it about 4-5 inches from the bottom and big enough to point the nozzle of the machine into it... then drill 8-10 3/8" holes in the bottom of the bucket... then cut 4 - 1 1/2" holes in the side of the bucket opposite of the nozzle hole and fill the bucket with big chunks of ice or dry ice... place a drip pan under the rig to catch the water as the ice melts... pump the fog through the ice and it will stay low longer.... another trick to get fog to stay on grass is to wet the grass with cold water and spray the fog onto it... it looks like it is comming from the ground...

Good luck

DO NOT PLAY WITH THE LIQUID IT WILL DO NOTHING!!! The fan wont work. Let me fill you in on how a fog machine works. It heats up a liquid to turn it into steam. The fog rises because of its hotter than the surronding air. The best way to cool it is to get an old cooler, like foam, and fill it with ice. Then run the fog though that. For all your halloween needs, goto: http://markbutler.8m.com/monsterlist.htm
it has plans for fog chillers among many cool animatronics and halloween-type stuff.

I don't know if thickening the juice will do it, however, when in one of my films we had a reactor leaking, we had the fog creep under a door and along the ground. To do this we just dropped a chunk of dry-ice in a bucket of tap water. A pounf should make fog for a good half-hour. Just a thought.

The person who decorated for my wedding told me that one company makes fog juice that hangs near the floor for use on dance floors, but I haven't seen it in use, so I can't vouch for it. Nothing beats beats dry ice for fog that sits on the ground - CO2 is heavier than air.

I had a question I wanted to ask concerning the safety on the fog. I remember hearing that you if you breath it too much it can be harmful, in an extreme case even cause cancer. I'm going be using one next summer and I just wanted to know the precautions I should take.

Thanks,

I KNOW HOW TO MAKE FOG STAY LOW TO THE GROUND!!
you have to make a fog chiller, it will make the fog more dence and i will stay low to the ground. (as dry ice would)
heres the plans!
