Hi, I'm back. I was wondering if any of you knew how you could make an object in 3dsmax and disguise like a chameleon to be apart of my background (video footage background) so my animated character can walk behind the hidden one and look like it has gone behind it? I was wondering if I could render that as kind of a transparent mask in other words. Thanks everyone.

Oh, were you gone?
Well, I don't know much about that program, but could you mask off the area you want the character to walk behind, then copy it onto a new layer exactly on top of the original, then your character could walk between the layers? But it'd look like he was going behind it.

I don't know if you are able to mask in max like you can in photoshop. Try to imagin something like Jar jar walking behind a tree, that is somewhat the same principle that I would like to acheive. I'm trying to make an animate truck roll off of a still picture or a video of a ledge or bank. From the angle it is shot at, the truck has to disappear as it goes over the edge bit, by bit, frame by frame.

I think we had a discussion about this before, but I don't recall anyone ever knowing for sure, but as far as I'm concerned, any input is appreciated. Thanks

Hey, just do your animation, and then in post production, send your piece through photoshop, and bring the background element you want forward... Get what I mean?

Hi!

What you want is pretty easy with MAX.

Put your video-footage as background.
Create a 3d-object that matches the real world object.
Apply a "Matte/Shadow" material to your 3d-object. This way all 3d-scene objects behind it will be hidden.
Set your 3d-scene lighting correct and you will be able to cast convincing shadows on your real-world object.

Hope this helps
