I'm working on a little horror film in which people are attacked by some invisible... thing. beast. whatever.
i was wondering if anybody could give me some tips on this... most of it is pretty simple... amputations, blood squirting, and the like. but i'd also like to show cuts and slashes appearing out of nowhere...
any thoughts? email me if you like.

well, here is the obvious yet not so great affect. if you can do blue/green screen...make the object you are gonna cut blue/green and have some blood or some other color inside of it (like a pillow with weird colors to stab)...anyway, stab it, key the color out...place over background...you get the point.

For cuts and slashes from out of no where, do this. Feel free to change things as you may need to for your movie.

One, get the following:
Red make-up
liquid latex
fishing line
some regular flesh colored make-up. Maybelline or whatever. probably the cheapest stuff you can find will be better. I have no clue the prices of make-up, for I am a man baby, yeah!

Now, to do this, you need to put red make-up directly on a section of an arm or neck wherever. Not too big, just like a line, maybe an inch wide and however long you want. (Four inches will be good...)

Then, take the liquid latex, and apply it evenly over the red so it looks like skin. (It doesnt have to be perfect, only about a half second or more of the shot should be used for realism..)

Find some way to get the fishing line, or thread whatever, to be attached to the liquid latex. Put the regular ,make-up over the liquid latex to match the skin color. If it is white thread you are using, put it on the thread too.

Go in for a close up or at least be closer to the victim...

Then start shooting and pull the string off very VERY quickly. It should acheive the effect of skin being clawed off. Then before you go back to a regular shot, put some blood and more make up as you see fit on the scratch.

Remember, practice makes perfect! I hope I was of some help.
