I'm working with an idea I have for a film. Okay, I won't bore you with the story, but at the end, two modern-day wizards (guys with basically infinate magic power) duke it out one on one. So pretty much, these two guys can do anything to try to kill each other. Lightning, fireballs, gravity-defying acrobatic kicks, you name it. I'm talking, like, Dragonball Z crap. I would like some of your ideas on what kinds of cool junk these two can do to each other.Oh, and I don't want anything REALLY destructive that would like, vaporize the city or anything. |

Not my particular style, but interseting nonetheless. Since these wizards can do ANYTHING, you're really going to have to pick a few motifs you would like. For example, they could turn into animals, combat each other with starships or mind meld to death. I know my ideas sound boringly conventional, but if you can narrow it down a bit it would be easier to help you out.-Spock ------------------ Live long and profit |

View the end of fist of the north star anime, then check out fist of the north star live action. maybe a few of those HK costume action things like swordsman or a chinese ghost story... are you wondering how to do it? I say get your hands on after effects and go freaking crazy. Translucent Energy waves, directed energy blasts, teleportation, etc... Don't be discouraged when someone tells you that it's been done. Do it cause you like to do it. The more you do it now, the better you get, then you'll get into a professional project with your telent and expertises... you see where that's going. Practice and play is the way. Don't be afriad to try an innovative way to do an effect and fail. Just learn from it and try at again in a deffernt way. ------------------ "I like to see things as I remember them, not as they were." -Bill Pullman "Lost Highway" |

More specifically, I was wanting a more traditional magic aproach. That's what I don't know a lot about, though, and that's why I'm asking you guys. I want to stay away from high-tech, mostly. What did they do in those old stories that I could bring back? What movies should I see? ahlstar, this isn't the Matrix. This just the end of story that is totally diffrent. It just winds its way to this fight, it does not revolve around it. Suggest non-Matrix stuff! That's what I'm looking for. |

Film Boy, could you elaborate please? on the subject of more trditional magic? Like do you mean spells or what? Whatever kind it is just post it and I will try and help you out.Oh PS- Go to Blockbuster or where ever and rent Warlock and Warlock 2 The Armageddon. The movies aren't THAT great, but they both use magic a lot. |

Well, if you are looking for cool ways for your wizards to kick each others ass then why not just take a few ideas from Dragon Ball Z itself??? I think that one of the coolest and most visually impressive things were during the fight between Frieza and Goku...one kick from Frieza would send Goku spiraling toward the earth 1/4 mile into the surface, or when Frieza grabbed Goku and flew THROUGH a mountain using Goku as a shield, the same mountain that he had earlier cut in half and threw on Goku...and since you are having fireballs i guess you have good CGI programs so you could just use a particle system for all of the debris...and i know they took off of star wars a bit but telekenetics and force throw/push always looks fancy...are your wizrds going to be using ONLY magic, or will they be fighting hand to hand and/or with hand held weapons too? That would look sweet, a fast and furious swordfight in the sky, with lots of flying around and magic attacks...speaking of magic you said nothing too high tech that would destroy a city, well in the "more traditional magic" days many spells called upon the elements, you could have a wall of water fly towards one wizard, or have one create a blinding fog used to sneak around and attack from behind...also "traditional" magic seemed also to be use as a defense, mostly tricking a weak minded oppenent with illusions such as creating numerous duplicates of ones self and attacking while only one was real... |

You might want to get one of the Advanced D&D rule books on magic (Grinmoire). I used to play it in my long-past wayward youth (when AD&D was fairly new). The rule books have been expanded, and the ruls themselves have grown senselessly enormous, but the descriptions of spells and their effects and requirements could be extremely helpful. Check out various used book stores for second hand copies.Lord of the Rings (Tolkien) and many fantasy writers since have dealt with magic, some in excrutiating detail - delve into the fantasy section of your new/used bookstore. ------------------ Jeff F - Magic and FX Amazing the Masses

Ah, I like the duplicated person idea. And before I do much writing I will definitely check out D&D in detail. Kwitcherbit_chen, I'm looking for instantaneous, direct stuff. Spells and what-not are cool, but indirect.. you know what I mean? I'm looking for more physical kinds of things. Now, as for weapons and hand to hand fighting. I thought the fight would begin with simple, but powerful fighting. (you know, when you are punched you fly back 3 meters) and then escalate. Guns would not really do anything, a wizard could let the bullets pass through him. Knives are okay, I suppose, but to me, using them would kind of be like throwing a stone at sombody in the middle of a gun fight with AK47s. |

I have little respect for the AK47 as a weapon. The HK MP series tends to be a better value in most combat situations while the 7.62 rounds of the AK are better for a poor mans snipeing rifle.I know tha has nothing to do with nothing. I find the people flying long distances after a punch a bit silly. Hercules the TV series case in point. It always ends up looking goofy. Perhaps a blurring motion on the arms while throwing punches to show a preternatural speed. Case in point; Matrix. Neo is up against a wall being punched in his kidneys. The arms blur. Reminds me of some moves in the street fighter video game and fist of the north star anime. Check it out. ------------------ "I like to see things as I remember them, not as they were." -Bill Pullman "Lost Highway" |

Give you a hint.I am a magician by trade and do special FX on the side. Try contacting "Visual Magic" in Florida. They carry a variety of cool fire related magic effects (really weird stuff) that might suit your needs. Last phone number I had listed for them is (727) 372-2701. No sure if they are on the web.
