If I wanted to post a video clip on the web, I presume I would use an MPEG codec to compress it. Now, here's my questions: Which version of the MPEG codec is the best? MPEG-1? MPEG-2? MPEG3? MPEG-598730457? Which is the best? And once I find the version of MPEG, how would I go about compressing an AVI? Do I need special software? Does it cost dinero? Is there anywhere on the internet I could >cough, cough< download it from? Thanks for any help. Peace.

go with mpeg1 or 4 mpeg 2&3 take up HUGE amounts of space. Just change your codec in premiere to compress

You do need a compressor for MPEG, though. Premiere doesn't come with one built-in. Check the web for freeware MPEG compressors, or purchase one of the more highly regarded ones (check past threads, I know that two or three have been pretty regularly suggested.)

MPEG is a lossy codec, though. That's why MPEG-2 takes up so much space - it's DVD quality (little to no loss.)

MPEG-1 is VHS quality, although fast camera movement or action gets pretty pixelated even at the highest settings. Remember old-school VCD's? That's MPEG-1.

MP-3 is audio only, I believe, and MPEG-4 can be gotten through Microsoft's Media Producer program, which is free for download. I believe that it's roughly equivalent quality to MPEG-1, or maybe a little better, even. But VCD/DVD players can't read it.

My buddy has one of those sony mavicas. We did some of our audio on it. Took the mpg file into premiere to edit it, but the playback had a big echo after every second word. But any mpg player played it fine. Anyone have a clue what's wrong?

mpeg3 is differnet from mp3. mp3 is mpeg layer 3 witch is a sampleing of data from a CD. mpeg3 is video compression codec more advacned than mpeg2

mpeg layer 3 is audio only. It's a codec that strips off sound frequencies that the human ear can't hear.
