Put the latex on a small area, no more than you can work on and finish before the latex dries. While the latex is wet, put a piece of tissue on the surface. You want to get the tissue pretty soaked through. Move it around to create your wrinkles, then let it dry. You can use a hair dryer to speed it up, but remember when the actor says it is too hot, back off. You can start on the next area before the first area is dryed. After all the latex is dry, you can add your makeup over it. You need to use cake, unless you seal the latex and powder it before using creams. You can also do a good effect using latex and oat meal. Corn meal will leave a very rough 'dirty' texture.

Remember that latex will probably pull out any hair that it touches, so be kind. Use lots of cleaning agents, and even have the person shave the skin first. It sounds stupid, but I promise they will feel each hair of peach fuzz that every one has, even women.

Another suggestion is to find a copy of Richard Corson's 'Stage Makeup'. It is the best book for beginners. The latest edition is the 8th, and it is said that there will be a 9th edition, but when is the question. Unfortunantly Mr. Corson past away the first part of 1999.

How does the oatmeal and latex idea work. Could you explain?

Same as the tissue. Use a layer of latex as the adhesive for the oarmeal. You can use a lot of different things. The latex is a very good adhesive in this use. There is an adhesive called Duo Medical adhesive. It is basicly latex. There are other brands, and they may be an acrylic modified latex. The latex is a lot cheaper than Duo. Try several things, oat meal, corn meal, frosted flakes. They will give different textures. Play with a few things untill you find the look you want.

hey there i did this with cotton balls and some latex. pretty much started out with no expectations, but it came out.

i put a little latex down on the back of my hand, took a few cotton balls, twisted them together and stretched them out to make the bones. spread latex over them let that dry a little while i worked on the torn open skin, that was flattened out cotton balls and latex. I used some grease paint, some powdered between colors, some wasnt. i added some blood and voila! a torn open hand, of course a zombie wouldn't have flowing blood or such a healthy look. BTW, the pic on the left i took with a flash, so its a little washed out.
