My son wants a realistic G suit for Halloween next year and I'd like to make him one. Only one problem: I don't really know where to start. I know a little about sculpting and casting for the head but not for the whole body. Any help?

Rob Burman has a videoguide on the Techniques of Lifecasting (vol. 1, #3) in which he covers a method of full-body lifecasting. Sorry I have no link to where you can order it, but you may want to check it out.

Be certain to leave yourself far more time than you think you'll need - in other words start tomorrow! Tackling a big project like this will help you define your strengths and illuminate your weaknesses or areas that need work.

If the costume can be loose you can work on a mock up of your son instead of an actual lifecast. Since you are likely to start this soon and he may grow a bit between now and next October depending on how old he is, You won't want a super precise approach like you would for a make up prosthetic.

Carving large pieces of styrofoam into the aproximate shapes required or making paper mache or wood & chicken wire forms as a starting place may work depending on the look you are going for. Most likely you'll want to sculpt and cast the thing in sections as a matter of practicality anyway.

It is easier, less expensive, and lighter weight to sculpt on top of an armature, but the armature doesn't have to be precise, just fairly accurate. If your son is old enough to help, working together on this for months on end could be a fantastic bonding experience.
