Greetings all,

I would like to know how I would go about making a burn mask/appliance (ala Freddy K.) I would like for it to cover the whole head. Any idea on where to get started? Books? Ideas? Thanks in advance..

i got this one

yes...there was an article in "Cinemagic Horrer FX magazine" ...cant find the date on it, but i'm sure you can find something on the web related to it, or perhaps find it at a local library. Gorezone #17 has an article on darkmans makeup, which is pretty much the same type thing and goes into more detail

something simple COULD done with gelatin...just be careful not to burn the actor...you apply the gelatin warm to the actors face with a popsicle stick or similar tool, then pull up and drag it around, it forms a similar look when painted. i have a pic around here somewhere of it that i did on my hand.

edit...just adding a pic...

later

VERY nice Tom. I have also found gelatin to be one of the best for free form burns.
Since you are trying to make a full mask, you will need to learn about life casting, mold making and different prosthetic materials. There are books At places such as burmans and monstermakers.com which can help with this. Look for books on 3 dimensional make-up and lifecasting. You can also look around your library(search under stage make-up, 3d make-up etc.). There are also a few sites around with good info. Fxman's site is one. Tom's site also has some good info on molding.

The first full head make up I did was a Freddy - done entirely in geltatin appliances.

The cap wound up being much too heavy and hot, so for the next incarnation I made the "cap" (covered the whole head except for the face and neck) with thin slush cast liquid latex and the face & neck used 7 prosthetic pieces. A PAX Paint-like formula was used to tie the whole thing together color-wise.

The best video I've seen on Mask making is
The Art Of Creating Latex Masks by Karl Zundel.
If you're looking for a gelatin formula there's a great one in Makeup Artist Magazine back issue #21.
