Hi.

Please excuse my ignorance, but up until now I've only been doing straight to face makeup, but now I plan to start playing around with appliances. The main question I am here to ask is - Slush latex, is this the same stuff as Liquid Latex? I know LL is very different to foam latex, but Slush latex I'm not so sure about. And if Slush Latex is a different product, does anyone know where I could get it in Australia?

Hey Muncher666,

Well SLUSH latex is more of a process than a type of latex. SLUSH latex is or can be any type of latex other than foam latex base - and even that in some remote form could be used though it's consistency is almost TOO thick to slush well in a mold. But SLUSH latex means simply pouring in a liquid latex and "slushing" it around inside the mold in an attempt to evenly coat the inside of the mold with however many layers you want to build up thickness in the finished piece you're making. Lattices vary so much from brand to brand and manufacturer to manufacturer in that the additives and other chemicals they use - while they can be "standard" to some degree, aren't always. But there is Balloon rubber, mold rubber, casting rubber and others some of which use ammonia as the base or "transport medium" or plain distilled water - in addition to clay fillers or some other type of filler to give the latex body. Most standard liquid lattices are air cure type but a few require heating to vulcanize.

Conversely foam latex is a rather thick latex base to which several ingredients are added to foam, cure, and gel the latex base after which it must be cooked. Now there are also the "cold foam" products which DON'T require baking but from what I know aren't all that good. But I don't know for sure as all I've ever used was the type that requires baking.

But slush latex might be used for noses, ears or other "appliances" which don't require that they lay close and/or conform to an actor's shape of face but are just slushed in and around inside the mold. A basic Halloween latex mask is prime example of slush latex processes.

So there you go. Anything further just ask.

Oh, BTW, as for where in Australia to get it, can't be of much help as I don't know what industries you all have there. But check with costume or makeup shops if you can find them and have them. Or see if there are any commercial rubber producing companies or the like. It's just a matter of research. Other than that, you can always order from one of the makeup shops online - and there are many all of whom will most likely carry liquid latex for this use. Good luck.

Yeah, we don't really have many costume or makeup shops down here (we don't celebrate Halloween) but Mucher666, you can get liquid latex from a place in the city called "backstage theatrical" they sell a big bottle for like $20.00 - I don't think it's a brandname, they just chuck it together themselves. Unfortunately I bought some a while ago (about 2 months ago) and haven't used it so I can't tell you what it's like... actually does anyone know if this stuff can go off or anything after a certain period of time?

Ahhh. I have my own Liquid Latex, and yes it's from Backstage Makeup. Yes, they are the savior of the Australian makeup community, but they are horridly expensive. Oh well - what can you do..
