Topic: Styrofoam filler putty and glue

i was wondering what would work best for glueing and puttying the seems on styrofoam. i'm building a spacesuit that uses styrofoam blocks to simulate the life support backpack so it has to hold together fairly well as actors will be working with it. this is not a material i have much expirence with so i'd like to the avoid trial and error method of figuring it out. thanks.

Liquid nails for the main parts. Auto body putty for the bubble holes. Then paint the basic unit with a good poly to seal it. Add the detail parts (insigs, valves, guages, etc) after the main units are done. You can get plastic or resin casting kits at hobby shops for the details. Carve the detail out of wax, make a mold from the kit, cast and paint it. Hoses can be found at plumbing supplu houses or auto part places.[This message has been edited by cdolsen (edited 12-17-2000).] |

I must agree with cdolsen on this one. There is also this silicone caulk stuff that my grandfather uses for filling gaps in the woodwork to keep out insects and moisture. I once used this stuff when I was a little kid to make a foam-rubber mask. I believe you can paint this stuff once it's dry. |

The only problem with silicone is it dosn't always stick to things. but you can use the clear caulking to make all kinds of neat things. You'd have to paint it with the same silicone thinned out with a solvent like naptha or D-linomene (actually any solvent works), pigmented with oil paints from art supply stores.------------------
