Looking for a good way to suspend someone from a hangmans nuse around there neck and still have them breath, need to be suspended for about ten minutes
you need a special harness that is kind of like a baby swing, and is concealed under the actor's clothing. The actual rope is tied to this harness. it just goes right down from the hoist into the back of his shirt, adn attaches to the harness. The noose is a totally different rope. it is a really short one that can be attatched by sewing it to the rope attached to the harness with some fishing line. YOu have to tie it sort of high so that it appears tight, and so it looks like the actor is actually "hanging". It is really hard to describe.
This is the best way that I can think of to appear to hang someone. there's probably a better way, but this is a safe way without using any CGI effects.

This is a judgement call here. This affect can be done with a harness, but we really shouldnt discuss that here. Chances are that one of the "Mod Squad" will lock this thread. But before they do, let me offer you a SAFE solution.
I have found a simpler solution. It does not involve harnesses or ropes. See my post below.

Actually, THERE IS ANOTHER WAY. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS ONE FIRST.
Have the setup mentioned above, but instead of the harness, have the actor standing on a stool, that has been completely covered in blue fabric, or paint. Have the actor stand of it on his tiptoes. If you need it to look like he is swinging, has him stand on one foot, while kicking the other one back and forth. He can also shift his shoulders up and down, and back and forth. For long distance shots of him swinging, use a dummy.
Shoot the scene twice, once witht he actor there, and one with him not. Be sure to duplicate the cameras movements EXACTLY each time. The best way to do this, Lock the camera down. In post, key out the blue stool.

Make sure not to encircle an actor's neck with anything that could choke him/her if caught on something. If you must use a real rope, make sure it is cut in the back and secured together with masking tape or the like - strong enough to hold it in place but impossible to support any weight should any sort of accident occur on set.

Rent the movie 'Heathers'. There is a scene when Wynona Ryder fakes hanging herself with the same rig discussed above. Pretty good job if you ask me...
