Matt Singer came by the studio today to give a demo of his new, easier to use GFA appliance kit he's making available exclusively (for the time being) from Circle K in California. It is similiar to the systems used previously in that it consists of an enveloping substance and a gel silicone core. Major differences are: 1 - Tin cure silicone gel; no more worries about cure inhibition due to sulphur, etc. So you can even use molds that foam latex had been run in previously. 2 - The softness of the gel is created by the formulation of the silicone, not by thinning with silicone oil, which caused oil leeching (and bad adhesion) in the past. 3 -The enveloping medium is some kind of water based acrylic emulsion, not a dense silicone (and also not Zeltex) so it adheres better, doesn't dissolve in alcohol, and can take your favorite coloring medium with ease.Prep was very easy. If We'd not been going through the slight mold modifications and other details step by step with lots of o'questions and other snappy banter going on, the molds could have been prepped and filled in under an hour. The cure time, at the softness we chose, is supposed to be under an hour. We will be demolding these tomorrow. And the cost for this? Hold your undies, kids. Yer looking at about $225.00 for a half gallon kit. But a little does go a long way. Back with details tomorrow. Any of you who went to the Makeup Artist Magazine Trade Show last year will recall seeing the Keith Richards makeup on Claire that was done by Matt and Lennie McDonald using slightly different materials. |

Well, the materials work as they are intended to work, meaning that the enveloping material dries, and the silicone gel sets in the time alloted. But as we were using old foam latex molds (which were very thin appliances) we had sorta iffy results. A second mold was made specifically for the process. The first had a few air bubbles in the gel (curious, as wel de-aired before injection) the second's envelope tore during demolding. The materials work, there are some details that need to be worked out for consistancy on the operator's part. The materials are being sold by Circle K, but we didn't ask about a website, though. We're doing a few more tests with different variables to see what we can come up with. Very expen$ive tests. |
