Every place I've found that sells alginate, sells it by the pound, every set of directions that I've found generally says use about 3 or 4 cups for a facial cast. I'm sure anyone who has done at least one life cast can tell me how many pounds of alginate I would need to buy to equal about 4 cups.Jesse Adams www.division-nine.com |

i think its roughly 4-5 cups per pound, but thats loosely (if at all) packed. This is just a guesstimation, since i never weighed the stuff. ask the places you're looking into, sales reps would brobably have a better idea later Tom

Alginate usually comes in 2 1/2 pound amounts (or 1 lb. in a lot of places). But why 2 1/2 I have no idea. Anyway, in that 2 1/2 pound amount there is about 7 cups. I used almost a 2 1/2 pound amount to do a life cast of someone from the neck to almost the waist front and back. But for a front of face life cast it shouldn't take more than 2 - 3 cups maximum. Anything more is wasteful. Depends upon what you intend to do with it. But for the most part 3 cups is about average or slightly less.If you need any more help just E-Mail or post. FXMan |

YIKES!!! Perhaps I better weigh the stuff I buy next time. Maybe it WAS a one pound bag that I used. Could have been. But maybe the vendors are shorting me. Hmmm?? Better check next time. THANKS for the update on the amounts.FXMan |

I wouldn't worry too much about this - I think this is fairly variable and a little subjective. Alginate is supposed to be shaken and "fluffed up" with air before measuring for mixing, so I suppose you might get different amounts of "packed" cups depending on how packed the measuring cup is. I suppose different brands might vary in density so a 2 1/2 pound container might vary in physical amounts. In any case this is a fluffy powder, not something dense and granular like sugar. Then again, I wouldn't put it past some vendors to short people a bit, either! ------------------ Jeff F - Moderator Magic and FX Amazing the Masses |
