Hi!For our next flick we need some fake guts. I fancied about using pig guts, but we won't (health risks because of bacterias, etc.). Does anyone know what we could do to get it right. I though that we might do something with condoms, who knows. Any idea? Your help is appreciated! |

this is just an idea that just popped into my mind. ok here goes. go out and get some present wrapping paper rolls, the longest that you can find, and take the plastic wrapper off of it, without cutting down the sides, you now have a long plastic tube. make sure one end is sealed off, and fill the thing with the contents of your choice, (sausage links would work well to shape it) and then tie off the open end. hang this from the ceiling or something, and then get a hair blow drier. turn it on its highest setting and then use it on the plastic tube, if you do it right, you should be able to shrink wrap the contents of the tube and have it look like guts. again, this is just an idea, im not sure if it would work or not.------------------ if i could i would but i cant so i wont this mission just got a whole lot more impossibler www.novicepictures.com |

If you don't know how to or don't want to bother with plaster molds, you could sculpt internal organs with plastecine clay and apply liquid latex on top of it until you build up a thick enough layer to slit open & remove the clay inside. Someone waving a blowdrier set on high air level and medium heat can dry such a construction pretty quickly. With a single layer of thick latex reinforced wth paper towels you can do a quick and dirty propr this way. It will lack fine detail, so you'll have to exaggerate the depth of details, but it is a fast way of making guts. I've done it for Haunted Houses when we suddenly needed guts produced within a matter of hours, the lighting was to be dim, and no one would be seeing them in close up. I'd still reccomend sculpting, molding, and slush casting rubber organs for low cost and relative realism, but the above method does work if you're up against the wall. Clay, latex, and plaster aren't very expensive and are indispensible materials in prop & FX work. They are usually not suitable for appliance work, but they are useful to have available and to have skills in working with them. ------------------ Jeff F - Moderator Magic and FX Amazing the Masses |

Hello! Thanks for both of you for your kind help! I think I won't show anything else than a stomach (eviscerated zombie). Jeff, what kind of 'thick latex' would you recommend for the job? I thought about filling the guts with a mixture of slime and cat food before applying vaseline to the guts to give them a 'wet look'. Won't this stuff harm the latex prop? Thanks again and have a nice day! Petroleum Jelly will attack latex, but it will take time for this to occur. Tire shine & protectant products like Armor All usually contain petroleum products that are harmless to the synthetic materials used in tires but will attack naturual latex.KY Jelly is water based and won't harm latex, neither will methylcellulose or silicone grease, or any of the silicone lubricant spray found at any hardware store. You can buy mold making latex that has fillers and thickeners already added to it at many craft stores. These additives will make it shrink more than unfillered latex. You can also buy liquid latex and get thickeners and bulk fillers from the supplier. I have had good results with Cementex's products over the years. www.cementex.com

Here is a simple thing you could try if you want to mimic intestines. Go to your local butcher (i guess that is where you can get it) and pick up some sausage casings. Stuff long legnths of the sausage casing with jello that has had milk added while it was cooling. It will have a pinkish color, and in places red will show through. It will also have the right wieght, and texture. Doing it this way, you can also ensure the consistency you want, and it will still be soft enough to jiggle around, but not TOO soft where it will fall through your fingers. Just make sure you do not EAT the jello, becuase the milk, combined with the fruit substance, can cause the milk to curdle. Also, make sure you use any redish jello, and make sure to twist the ends of the tubing tight, then seal them wit tape of something. For added effect, you might want to mix a small amount of purple jello into the mix too, to simulate veins and such. When it is time to use these prop guts, make sure you have lots of fake blood to pour on them, around them, etc... ------------------ "May the Force be with you."
