Firewire is great, just make sure you have a fast HD.
It captures in realtime just like any other card, but it makes an exact copy of what you have and loses no frames. The DV200 is a great card at 400 bucks

Yeah. The Pinnacle(brand) StudioDV costs about $199. It's a FireWire capture card, so, like NJR said, you get high quality video.

Does the movie still take approx 3.5 megs per second of footage?

I Have studio Dv. Yes it takes about 3.5 megs per second to capture, but thats in full quality. To edit you can capture a lower quality version. I like the studio dv but there are problems, it crashes often, there are plenty of bugs in the software, but patches are coming out to fix most of the problems.

You might want to think about deciding to wait and save up for a reliable firewire board instead of gambling with a finnicky one. Especially when the slightly more expensive boards probably come with excellent software, special effects packages, and solid tech support. DV Raptor's been my favorite investment ever in my computer. Once I got it installed, I've never had a single problem with it.

Most DV cameras have analogue outputs, so you can always get a cheap analogue capture card in the meantime.

With all due respect to the previous poster, I would strongly encourage you to go the DV solution. Regarding the speed of the hard drives, ultra-ide drives work great, and they are very cheap (20+gig <$200).
