Ask yourself, do you really want a cheap capture-card? What do you want it for? The cheapest cards are probably one of those "you can't capture with this sh*t anyway"-card.Save some money (about 1000 bucks) and buy yourself a nice DC30+ or something like it. You can find more info at www.pinnaclesys.com -Arc ------------------ In DriveSpace noone can hear your computer scream. |

Well then you've got time to save some money, don't you?Seriously I don't know how much the cheapest is, but I guess the Miro-studio 400 is one of the cheapest. It's accually not a capture card. But you can capture low-quality-video with it. If you can save 200-300 bucks I suggest you buy the DC10+. You can find info on both of the cards at the link above. ------------------ In DriveSpace noone can hear your computer scream. |

ok...DO NOT buy the studio 400!!! its the cheapest, crappiest thing ever created! and im not just speaking from what ive heard or rumors...i actually had one. its horrible. id rather spend the 120 bux that it costs on getting a labotomy...cuz thats essentially what ull be paying for if u buy the studio 400: a brain hemridge. spend the extra 30 bux on the studio dc10+. arcain is wrong. its only 149.99 at compusa (if u have one near u) and only 199.99 mail order. its well worth the cost. i own it, and i can do anything i want. broadcast quality capture/output, i can use any programs i want with it (premiere, afterFX). get it. dont think, just get it |

okay, to start off are you going to be editing from a Digital (DVcam, Digital 8, or MiniDV) or Analog (VHS, 8mm, Hi8, SVHS, VHS-C, S-VHS-C, etc.) a good digital card is relatively cheaper than a good analog card. The Main reason is with a digital card, there is not as much decoding to do from the firewire source. (The firewire is the type of connection to a DV camcorder, and its not found on analog). So basically, all that kind of card does is provide a data port, not much different then say a USB or Serial port. An analog card on the other hand has to decode your incoming video into a digital format that can be stored in your computer (commonly as .avi files). This type or card is probably going to be what you want, unless you have a high-end digital camera. I own a DC 30 plus to do my analog (not digital) editing. www.videoguys.com has good prices for just about any capture card there is, they also have a lot of good explanations on the similarities and differences between them. Anything Pinnacle or Miro is usually a good buy, except for their Studio products which i highly do not reccoment. Any of there Dc series is good. A really benefitial feature some of there cards have (not sure about the DC 10) is "Instant Video." Its a plugin that says 50% of your harddrive space by rendering certain transistions and effects and storing them. It literally saves HOURS of time on a project!
Adobe premiere is the best editing program you can get. It is great, and is usually bundled with most capture cards.
