Folks:

It's obvious that a capture card could effectively be used as a descrambling device for television signals. Of course, it would require an extensive knowledge of programming and the way cable signals are scrambled.

Has anyone ever tried this or given much thought to it? I know that the code would have to vary from capture card to capture card, but it intrigues me.

Mind you, I'm not asking for any illegal purposes, just asking out of sheer curiousity. =)

Actually, the resent craze has been to you your computer to decode DSS (Digital Satillite Signals). There's plenty of info out there on the web about this, but I'm not sure many people use computer to descramble cable. Since cable is basicly analog, it's best to keep it that way and use a box.

Also, let's try to refrain from this type of discussion.

Yep, digital is the mave of the future and people are trying to exploit it as soon as possible. However, digital cable is also becoming popular as well, so it's not just satellite anymore.

The actual reason I was trying to figure this one out is because descramblers can amplify the signal coming in from the wall. Consequently, if you have poor reception or some old tapes you would like to clean up a bit, they can be handy (i.e. my old tapes of MST3K). If this could be done without the use of a peripheral device, that would be nice. I posted this out of curiousity, like I said before.

And as far as using it to descramble HBO late at night or Playboy, please. I get my kicks in real life. =)
